Watchmen Indie/Underground?

 File:Watchmencharacters.jpg

Watchman as Indie/Underground? I guess we hit a though one now. Honestly I don't know what to think of this comic, just as I did with Firefly. This comic like I mentioned before on my blog is kind of like a history book form a specific man point of view. This comic was written to describe and tell a time in the US history from the author's point of view in this case Alan Moore. So is it Indie or and Underground comic? I'm not so sure, first of all to me comics seem a little underground, maybe because I'm not so familiar with them, and I never actually was into them. Where I grew up and up to this day comics, card games, and cartoon games brought to life were kind of underground, so I kind of put all of them into the underground category. I remember very specific locations were you can find this sorts of things. My cousin loved these kind of things and that's how I got to know them but it wasn't really my thing. Now coming back to Watchmen, we all know not all books make it to the big screen. Some of them really have to be big and famous in order to make it all the way to a movie adaption. I think in a way Watchman shares both the Underground part of it, but also the main stream part. It made it to be a huge movie, therefore it has to have something that defines it as mainstream. Even if you take the movie factor out of the way, many peole know about this comic; it might be the only comic they know about, but they know about it. Now coming to the underground part, it could have been a little more underground before than it is today. I mean the comic was written at a period in time were society followed different norms than now a days. The comic reflected times between 1940s and 1960s reflecting the troubles society had during the Vietnam war. It served as a way of expression during the time.

Watchmen

My first impression when I received the comic Watchmen from amazon was "Is this a book for an English class?", but now that we have discuss many lenses it makes more sense why we are using it. Watchmen's genre is kind of hard to define. Yes Watchmen is a comic, and of course is science- fiction because it has heroes in it and supernatural stuff that does not happen in real life. It falls into the usual comic line between heroes and their enemies, or the villains, but watchmen has a particular thing different than most comic books. In most comic books the heroes always do what is morally correct, in Watchmen the heroes kind of have a mind of their own they do as they please, yes they help society, but still they do as they please. Is kind of like they take advantage of being the heroes. Also watchman is like a parody for what was going on in the US at the time it was written. It is a representation of what was happening during those times, so if you think about it, it has some truth in between its lines. Watchman's content includes a lot of politics and it represents some politic issues that were occurring when the comic was written. So maybe is watchmen a politic-historic science-fiction comic? Who knows?

GOVERNMNET SHUTDOWN

As we all heard all over the news the government is going through a shutdown, and this hasn't happened in over 17 years.  This shutdown is affecting thousands, if not millions of people all over the U.S. Honestly in my opinion this actions are pretty stupid. In many of the blogs and other sources I have read so far, the government looks like two little kids fighting over a toy. They do not want to pass a budget and decide to shut government down and maybe if they shut it down it would affect enough people that it would make Obama-care to go away and disappear.  In my opinion is a great act and a great opportunity, but hey who's listening to me right? Apparently the government is not listening to any of us, and we are supposed to be the ones making the decisions. Honestly I think the solution for people like us would be to gather up and make ourselves be heard. It might not work at first but hey, we are a small group writing blogs about this, maybe if others outside class read this, they might jump in share and so on, until we get enough people involved that it would be impossible for the government not to listen, and also it would make it harder to shut us up.

Media Interests

"Run Baby Run" or "Corre Nicky Corre" in Spanish in the language I read this book is a testimony of an teenage boy who struggle with drugs, gangs, etc. I love this book it reminds me of my past, my childhood, who I am and mostly my dad and what we came to be.

I love "Degrassi", I like it because is more realistic than most teenage shows. It deals with real teenage problems not fantasies.

I like Mago de Oz because their not a very usual band they mix heavy metal, classic music, blues, jazz, and more. Not only that but they also sing about real life, problems, pleasure, politics, acceptance, equality, etc, their lyrics are poetic.

I like this Mexican novela because it's not only funny, sometimes unrealistic, romantic, and cool, but it also gets into your skin and you just can't stop watching or listening to their music.

I like Simone Elkeles books because her books create realistic worlds in which teenagers or even college students live. It deals with true emotions, psychological disorders, family, school, passion and more.

Firefly Genre, a Mystery?

Firefly to me; for what I've seen so far, is a bit of a strange show, I don't really understand what is going on so far, especially because we are skipping between episodes and they are a bit long. firefly has a lot of mixtures on its content and so is very very hard to find a genre for it. to say that firefly is just Science-Fiction is to broad. Of course is Science fiction because it involves futuristic settings and things that we do not have yet discovered or that they probably do not exist and never will be. Firefly is more than that, it is a combination of "Star Wars", "Star Trek", and even it seems to me like a little bit of "Cowboys vs. Aliens", it is just so mixed up and different, that is hard to find the right direction to point to. While reading the PDF "Captain Tightpants: Firefly and the Science Fiction Canon" it also reminded me a little bit of the "Lost" show. Even though I haven't gotten that far to tell yet, the PDF described how throughout the show you star seeing who the characters really are. You get to know their story, their past, and what makes them who they are. In the show "Lost" that's kind of how you get to know the characters isolated in an island, but in this case its a ship. So what genre does firefly belong to? To me is a mystery, and a mixture of many genres. If it was up to me I would put it under cultural, customs, and future and past science fiction, because it mixes all of this factors into one strange show.

Nerd-Burger Blog

Nerd Burger is an effective blogger in this video because she goes above and beyond to keep her audience interested on her video. She changes her tone of voice according to what she is trying to express to her audience. She does not only change her tone of voice but her body language as well. She talks with her hands, with her face and with pictures and animations of whatever she is talking about on her video. I took a look at her webpage and noticed that she always posts about what the meaning of each of her post is. She posts pictures of herself in very exotic and unusual outfits that you do not see everyday. She obviously does not care what others say or think about what she wears or the way she expresses herself. She uses her blogs to express herself and also to share her outfits, accessories, or products with others and with whomever might be interested on buying them.

I would like to apply some of the things that Nerd Burger does on her blog to mine. I would like to be able to maintain my blog so alive that people would be interested on it, and even if they are not so interested, that I can express myself in such freely and open way, without carrying what others might think or say in a negative way.

My expectations for this class blogs are:
1. To see other points of view in different topics.
2. To expand my knowledge on every aspect of the class
3. To get to know my classmates through their writing and their thoughts

Underground Artist

Nach Scratch is an underground Spanish raper, some of his music and videos you cannot really watch here in the US because its blocked on the area. He speaks about life, politics, abuse, survival, and freedom on his songs. On some of his songs you have to pay attention and analyze what he is saying in order to understand the whole concept of the song, and so that you can understand the metaphors he uses. He writes about what he believes and what he wants to communicate to others he is underground because he does not let others tell him how to write, what to say on his songs or how to say it, he is an independent artist.
