Firefly Genre, a Mystery?

Firefly to me; for what I've seen so far, is a bit of a strange show, I don't really understand what is going on so far, especially because we are skipping between episodes and they are a bit long. firefly has a lot of mixtures on its content and so is very very hard to find a genre for it. to say that firefly is just Science-Fiction is to broad. Of course is Science fiction because it involves futuristic settings and things that we do not have yet discovered or that they probably do not exist and never will be. Firefly is more than that, it is a combination of "Star Wars", "Star Trek", and even it seems to me like a little bit of "Cowboys vs. Aliens", it is just so mixed up and different, that is hard to find the right direction to point to. While reading the PDF "Captain Tightpants: Firefly and the Science Fiction Canon" it also reminded me a little bit of the "Lost" show. Even though I haven't gotten that far to tell yet, the PDF described how throughout the show you star seeing who the characters really are. You get to know their story, their past, and what makes them who they are. In the show "Lost" that's kind of how you get to know the characters isolated in an island, but in this case its a ship. So what genre does firefly belong to? To me is a mystery, and a mixture of many genres. If it was up to me I would put it under cultural, customs, and future and past science fiction, because it mixes all of this factors into one strange show.

  1. I agree with you that it is in a genre that is all its own. It is such a mixture of everything that it is difficult to just limit it to one category. The comparison to Lost was also interesting, I hadn't thought of that. I am also a little lost on some of the different aspects of the show and it is definitely strange.
